Madness, derangement, however you wish to refer to it – is best met with reason. I stay calm, preferring not to let my control lapse. I see all sorts of insanity in the world around me – I see people who have lost control, and I know that I must not let insanity consume me or I will not be able to continue my work.
And I prefer not to engage with those who have let themselves drift into states of unreason. Not to provoke them – my business is with the ungrateful, those who waste their lives and choose not to appreciate all that they have been blessed with, not with those who do not have the capacity for appreciation in the first place.
Some say I am a madman. Nothing could be further than the truth. What could be saner than helping people open their eyes to their own apathy, and helping them to dispel the illusions they have hidden behind for so long?

I am no saint, nor have I ever claimed to be. But if I can get those I see as worse than devils, those whose ingratitude I now seek to eradicate , to fear what I stand for, then well and good.
Ingratitude. Not appreciating life. Not being glad for the simple things, like the blue of the sky or the fresh taste of a glass of water. So many people have so much, and yet they waste it. This is what I seek to rid the world of with the tests, my work, my constant mission. I have so little time, the cancer makes sure of that, but I make the most of what I have.
If those I test die, they have brought that upon themselves. I did not kill them – I have never killed anyone. I despise murderers, in fact.
I will not fall upon my knees and pray. I don’t know if my body would allow it even if I wished to. But there will be trembling aplenty, oh yes, there will be.

Topic 2: One word prompt: Black
When John closed his eyes, all he saw was black. Empty darkness, stark and lonely, and he wondered if being dead would be like this. Would it only be blackness and silence, with nothing out there beyond the flesh? No heaven or hell, only loneliness? Would this mean that he would never be reunited with his unborn son, so cruelly snatched from his chance at life?
After being diagnosed with cancer, the question had nagged at him. And after his failed attempt at suicide, the gnawing, hidden fear of that emptiness and blackness to come was part of what spurred him on. His time was running out, so he had to throw himself wholeheartedly into his mission, which was building the traps – testing those who did not appreciate their lives, giving them the choice he did not have – to live or die. Whatever pain his test subjects suffered, they had brought upon themselves. If they could not learn to cherish the lives they had been given, then the black void of death could claim them.

This is what I get for being a rare slash/fandoms lover.
I've found Adam/Lawrence slash fics aplenty for the Saw fandom, but no slash featuring John anywhere. All I've found with John in it is gen fic or John/Amanda, and both for the most part are of iffy quality.
Oh well - I could always try to write some John slash... *goes off to hunt plotbunnies*

Here's an interesting interview with Tobin Bell, the actor who plays the Jigsaw Killer (John Kramer) in the Saw films. Some fascinating commentary on the trilogy and the upcoming sequel Saw 4, and some insights into his character from Bell himself, including that he perceives the character as having originally been christened Jonathan, although he is never called anything but John in canon so it's obvious that John is the name he prefers (Bell says the name Jonathan came to him in a dream) and also that he would have liked a John/Amanda romance in the movies but none was written...
